They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
And he cried to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a log,[3] and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD[4] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,
And of Levi he said, "Give to Levi[7] your Thummim, and your Urim to your godly one, whom you tested at Massah, with whom you quarreled at the waters of Meribah;
And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
