their descendants who were left after them in the land, whom the people of Israel were unable to devote to destruction[4] -- these Solomon drafted to be slaves, and so they are to this day.
And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land, God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart.
And he cried to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a log,[3] and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD[4] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,
And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are my people'; and they will say, 'The LORD is my God.' "
The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little. You may not make an end of them at once,[2] lest the wild beasts grow too numerous for you.
And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
so that the tested genuineness of your faith -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve.
And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.
