Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands afar off; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter.

And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them,

They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law.

Moreover, I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness, and in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness.

How the faithful city has become a whore,[4] she who was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.

"Listen to me, you stubborn of heart, you who are far from righteousness:

who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of his right!

For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed;[2] for righteousness, but behold, an outcry![3]

We all growl like bears; we moan and moan like doves; we hope for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us.

No one enters suit justly; no one goes to law honestly; they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies, they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity.

Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us; we hope for light, and behold, darkness, and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.

the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

And you shall say to them, 'This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression,[3] and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper.

When I would heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria; for they deal falsely; the thief breaks in, and the bandits raid outside.

Therefore because you trample on[2] the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

O you who turn justice to wormwood[1] and cast down righteousness to the earth!

Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there[1] with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood[2] --

So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.
