and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again.

These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed by[2] wine, they stagger with strong drink, they reel in vision, they stumble in giving judgment.

For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers).

My people -- infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up[5] the course of your paths.

Thus says the LORD: "Where is your mother's certificate of divorce, with which I sent her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities you were sold, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, that I might bless him and multiply him.

"Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins.

the elder and honored man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;

Let us lie down in our shame, and let our dishonor cover us. For we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day, and we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God."

the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

"How can you say, 'We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us'? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie.

The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them?

and say, Thus says the Lord GOD to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth are of the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.

Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the LORD and say, "Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us."

From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. But you say, 'How shall we return?'

And behold, you have risen in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel!

Let them alone; they are blind guides.[3] And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."

When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.

So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying,

"You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned --
