Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place, at the wrath of the LORD of hosts in the day of his fierce anger.

And people shall enter the caves of the rocks and the holes of the ground,[2] from before the terror of the LORD, and from the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to terrify the earth.

"For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain.

The LORD roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the LORD is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel.

The mountains saw you and writhed; the raging waters swept on; the deep gave forth its voice; it lifted its hands on high.

"Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth,

and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother.

This phrase, "Yet once more," indicates the removal of things that are shaken -- that is, things that have been made -- in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

"LORD, when you went out from Seir, when you marched from the region of Edom, the earth trembled and the heavens dropped, yes, the clouds dropped water.
