So Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Alas, this people have sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold.

O LORD the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this."

Even when they had made for themselves a golden[2] calf and said, 'This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,' and had committed great blasphemies,

Yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly.

The next day Moses said to the people, "You have sinned a great sin. And now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin."

So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.[3]

All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him.

we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.

To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.
