I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

I gave them my decrees and made known to them my laws, by which the person who obeys them will live.

“ ‘Yet the people of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my decrees but rejected my laws—by which the person who obeys them will live—and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and destroy them in the wilderness.

“ ‘But the children rebelled against me: They did not follow my decrees, they were not careful to keep my laws, of which I said, “The person who obeys them will live by them,” and they desecrated my Sabbaths. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness.

Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.

Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”

because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was,

The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”
