You have taken from me my closest friends and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;

What he tears down cannot be rebuilt; those he imprisons cannot be released.

He has blocked my way so I cannot pass; he has shrouded my paths in darkness.

They detest me and keep their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.

Look and see, there is no one at my right hand; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.

So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed.

Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me.

By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.

You have taken from me friend and neighbor— darkness is my closest friend.

This is what the Lord says— the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel— to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: “Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”
