My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.

“I cry out to you, God, but you do not answer; I stand up, but you merely look at me.

The arrows of the Almighty are in me, my spirit drinks in their poison; God’s terrors are marshaled against me.

You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?

We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.

Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

“Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the Lord Almighty. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
