The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in the darkness like those long dead.

I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery.

I am set apart with the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more, who are cut off from your care.

For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered; the days have already come when both have been forgotten. Like the fool, the wise too must die!

Then too, I saw the wicked buried—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten.

Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
