Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give us your advice. What should we do?”

Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.”

Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account”?

In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

The arrogant mock me unmercifully, but I do not turn from your law.

Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart.

The arrogant dig pits to trap me, contrary to your law.

I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes.

May the foot of the proud not come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

Arrogant foes are attacking me; ruthless people are trying to kill me— people without regard for God.

Let evil recoil on those who slander me; in your faithfulness destroy them.

He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’ ”

He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’
