You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed, those who stray from your commands.

“But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and they did not obey your commands.

“You warned them in order to turn them back to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, of which you said, ‘The person who obeys them will live by them.’ Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen.

I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.

The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.

You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their delusions come to nothing.

May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause; but I will meditate on your precepts.

Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me.

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.”

When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes.

Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned? For they would not follow his ways; they did not obey his law.

So I disgraced the dignitaries of your temple; I consigned Jacob to destruction and Israel to scorn.

“We will not listen to the message you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord!

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”

However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live

But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
