The king should know that the people who came up to us from you have gone to Jerusalem and are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are restoring the walls and repairing the foundations.

so that a search may be made in the archives of your predecessors. In these records you will find that this city is a rebellious city, troublesome to kings and provinces, a place with a long history of sedition. That is why this city was destroyed.

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”

He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.

Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter

and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”

I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”

When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).

Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is just!

through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;

keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
