“ ‘If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.

About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.” Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.

This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.

“ ‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you—they will both die on the same day.
