“Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?

Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed?

May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along, like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.

From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother’s womb. I will ever praise you.

And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive.

But better than both is the one who has never been born, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.

A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.

Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man—

“Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob, all the remnant of the people of Israel, you whom I have upheld since your birth, and have carried since you were born.

Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

For he did not kill me in the womb, with my mother as my grave, her womb enlarged forever.

Give them, Lord— what will you give them? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that are dry.
