“Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me?

I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.

Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’

“Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?

If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together,

Ensure your servant’s well-being; do not let the arrogant oppress me.

Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.

One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for a neighbor.

Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.

Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts;

and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

I cried like a swift or thrush, I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew weak as I looked to the heavens. I am being threatened; Lord, come to my aid!”

Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.
