Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate: “Is this the man who shook the earth and made kingdoms tremble,

The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again.

But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.

Because of the Lord’s anger she will not be inhabited but will be completely desolate. All who pass Babylon will be appalled; they will scoff because of all her wounds.

A sword against her false prophets! They will become fools. A sword against her warriors! They will be filled with terror.

The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and his hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.

Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Babylon, what he has purposed against the land of the Babylonians: The young of the flock will be dragged away; their pasture will be appalled at their fate.

At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble; its cry will resound among the nations.

No rock will be taken from you for a cornerstone, nor any stone for a foundation, for you will be desolate forever,” declares the Lord.

Prepare the nations for battle against her— the kings of the Medes, their governors and all their officials, and all the countries they rule.

Babylon will be a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and scorn, a place where no one lives.

Her towns will be desolate, a dry and desert land, a land where no one lives, through which no one travels.

The snorting of the enemy’s horses is heard from Dan; at the neighing of their stallions the whole land trembles. They have come to devour the land and everything in it, the city and all who live there.

Before them the earth shakes, the heavens tremble, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.

“Will not the land tremble for this, and all who live in it mourn? The whole land will rise like the Nile; it will be stirred up and then sink like the river of Egypt.

With a mighty voice he shouted: “ ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’ She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.
