Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives or fall among the slain. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.

“I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian— brother will fight against brother, neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.

In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth.

At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble; their cry will resound to the Red Sea.

At the sound of Babylon’s capture the earth will tremble; its cry will resound among the nations.

“The sound of a cry comes from Babylon, the sound of great destruction from the land of the Babylonians.

Nineveh summons her picked troops, yet they stumble on their way. They dash to the city wall; the protective shield is put in place.

“On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the New Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills.

Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
