People will flee to caves in the rocks and to holes in the ground from the fearful presence of the Lord and the splendor of his majesty, when he rises to shake the earth.

He shakes the earth from its place and makes its pillars tremble.

Arise, Lord, in your anger; rise up against the rage of my enemies. Awake, my God; decree justice.

Go into the rocks, hide in the ground from the fearful presence of the Lord and the splendor of his majesty!

See, the Lord is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants—

Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.

The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken.

Every stroke the Lord lays on them with his punishing club will be to the music of timbrels and harps, as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm.

“Now will I arise,” says the Lord. “Now will I be exalted; now will I be lifted up.

They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices in the rocks, on all the thornbushes and at all the water holes.

“But now I will send for many fishermen,” declares the Lord, “and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks.

At the sound of horsemen and archers every town takes to flight. Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks. All the towns are deserted; no one lives in them.

Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks, you who live in Moab. Be like a dove that makes its nest at the mouth of a cave.

“Say this to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those who are left in the ruins will fall by the sword, those out in the country I will give to the wild animals to be devoured, and those in strongholds and caves will die of a plague.

The high places of wickedness will be destroyed— it is the sin of Israel. Thorns and thistles will grow up and cover their altars. Then they will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!”

They will lick dust like a snake, like creatures that crawl on the ground. They will come trembling out of their dens; they will turn in fear to the Lord our God and will be afraid of you.

You too will become drunk; you will go into hiding and seek refuge from the enemy.

“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.

I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord Almighty.

Then “ ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’

They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might

At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”

Then God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.

During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.

So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in.”
