In that day the Egyptians will become weaklings. They will shudder with fear at the uplifted hand that the Lord Almighty raises against them.

Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor.

There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again.

This day they will halt at Nob; they will shake their fist at the mount of Daughter Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem.

The Lord will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea; with a scorching wind he will sweep his hand over the Euphrates River. He will break it up into seven streams so that anyone can cross over in sandals.

Raise a banner on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates of the nobles.

A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill.”

A sword against her horses and chariots and all the foreigners in her ranks! They will become weaklings. A sword against her treasures! They will be plundered.

Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting; they remain in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become weaklings. Her dwellings are set on fire; the bars of her gates are broken.

Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified, and everyone in Esau’s mountains will be cut down in the slaughter.

Look at your troops— they are all weaklings. The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire has consumed the bars of your gates.

They will pass through the sea of trouble; the surging sea will be subdued and all the depths of the Nile will dry up. Assyria’s pride will be brought down and Egypt’s scepter will pass away.

Be still before the Lord, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.”

I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.

I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.

Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
