He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.”

And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’

One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.

Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”

As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it.

He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
