Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.

Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’ ”

He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.”

These are the nations the Lord left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan

They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the Lord’s commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.
