For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?

We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope.

They spring up like flowers and wither away; like fleeting shadows, they do not endure.

If their children are honored, they do not know it; if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it.

for we were born only yesterday and know nothing, and our days on earth are but a shadow.

My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.

I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust.

They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.

Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.

He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.

Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all humanity!

and fools multiply words. No one knows what is coming— who can tell someone else what will happen after them?

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.

A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,

I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

The more the words, the less the meaning, and how does that profit anyone?

In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: the righteous perishing in their righteousness, and the wicked living long in their wickedness.

Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.

Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come?

Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.

Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
