“See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright— but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness—

or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.

Do not eat it, so that it may go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord.

Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God.

See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

Act according to whatever they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.

Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.

So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.

Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Samuel explained to the people the rights and duties of kingship. He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.

For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”
