Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light.

Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.

Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake.

to those who say, “Let God hurry; let him hasten his work so we may see it. The plan of the Holy One of Israel— let it approach, let it come into view, so we may know it.”

In that day they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea. And if one looks at the land, there is only darkness and distress; even the sun will be darkened by clouds.

For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.

Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

By the wrath of the Lord Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; they will not spare one another.

Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings the darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it to utter darkness and change it to deep gloom.

They keep saying to me, “Where is the word of the Lord? Let it now be fulfilled!”

How awful that day will be! No other will be like it. It will be a time of trouble for Jacob, but he will be saved out of it.

“Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by and every vision comes to nothing’?

“Son of man, the Israelites are saying, ‘The vision he sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies about the distant future.’

Alas for that day! For the day of the Lord is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.

Before them the earth shakes, the heavens tremble, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.

The Lord thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty is the army that obeys his command. The day of the Lord is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

“The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.

“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.

I will send wasting famine against them, consuming pestilence and deadly plague; I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts, the venom of vipers that glide in the dust.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”
