As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.’

While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.” “That is your sentence,” the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have set free a man I had determined should die. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.’ ”

So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning: “If one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape, it will be your life for his life.”

Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.

No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them—

However, if payment is demanded, the owner may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is demanded.

A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.

He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.

“A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work! A curse on anyone who keeps their sword from bloodshed!
