The wicked even boast of their greed; these robbers curse and scorn the Lord.

Their mouths are full of oaths, violence, and lies; discord and evil are under their tongues.

I do not allow into my presence anything base. I hate wrongdoing; I will have no part of it.

For he lives with the delusion: his guilt will not be known and hated.

Each evening they return, growling like dogs, prowling the city.

The lips of the just know favor, but the mouth of the wicked, perversion.

The justice of the upright saves them, but the faithless are caught in their own intrigue.

Scoundrels are a furnace of evil, and their lips are like a scorching fire.

Whoever winks an eye plans perversity; whoever purses the lips does evil.

The evildoer gives heed to wicked lips, the liar, to a mischievous tongue.

Saving you from the way of the wicked, from those whose speech is perverse.

To the Lord the devious are an abomination, but the upright are close to him.

Dishonest mouth put away from you, deceitful lips put far from you.

They have perversity in their hearts, always plotting evil, sowing discord.

[The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil;] Pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth I hate.

One basket contained excellent figs, those that ripen early. But the other basket contained very bad figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

You brood of vipers, how can you say good things when you are evil? For from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.

And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them.

And furthermore, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers but gossips and busybodies as well, talking about things that ought not to be mentioned.

Therefore, put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls.

The tongue is also a fire. It exists among our members as a world of malice, defiling the whole body and setting the entire course of our lives on fire, itself set on fire by Gehenna.

When Eliab, his oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he grew angry with David and said: “Why did you come down? With whom have you left those sheep in the wilderness? I know your arrogance and dishonest heart. You came down to enjoy the battle!”
