All the kin of the poor despise them; how much more do their friends shun them!

My heart shudders, my strength forsakes me; the very light of my eyes has failed.

Friends and companions shun my disease; my neighbors stand far off.

All day they surge round like a flood; from every side they encircle me.

Your wrath lies heavy upon me; all your waves crash over me. Selah

The wealth of the rich is their strong city; the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

Even by their neighbors the poor are despised, but a rich person’s friends are many.

The poor implore, but the rich answer harshly.

Wealth adds many friends, but the poor are left friendless.

Those who shut their ears to the cry of the poor will themselves call out and not be answered.

Do not give up your own friend and your father’s friend; do not resort to the house of your kindred when trouble strikes. Better a neighbor near than kin far away.

But you dishonored the poor person. Are not the rich oppressing you? And do they themselves not haul you off to court?
