God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?

For, although we are in the flesh, we do not battle according to the flesh,

yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me.

I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, [for] that is far better.

Yet that I remain [in] the flesh is more necessary for your benefit.

For I want you to know how great a struggle I am having for you and for those in Laodicea and all who have not seen me face to face,

so as not to spend what remains of one’s life in the flesh on human desires, but on the will of God.
