For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother shall die.’

“Cursed be anyone who dishonors father or mother!” And all the people shall answer, “Amen!”

Should any of them pass outside the doors of your house, their blood will be on their own heads, and we will be guiltless. But if anyone in your house is harmed, their blood will be on our heads.

This was to repay the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal and to avenge their blood upon their brother Abimelech, who killed them, and upon the lords of Shechem, who encouraged him to kill his brothers.
