but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.”

The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites [to him] to ask him, “Who are you?”

For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring among yourselves.

This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Then many of his disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?”

As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

And there was considerable murmuring about him in the crowds. Some said, “He is a good man,” [while] others said, “No; on the contrary, he misleads the crowd.”

Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer.

These people are complainers, disgruntled ones who live by their desires; their mouths utter bombast as they fawn over people to gain advantage. Exhortations.
