When it was noon, Elijah taunted them: “Call louder, for he is a god; he may be busy doing his business, or may be on a journey. Perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”

Appoint an evil one over him, an accuser to stand at his right hand,

[For their feet run to evil, they hasten to shed blood.]

Among all the things that are done under the sun, this is the worst, that there is one lot for all. Hence the hearts of human beings are filled with evil, and madness is in their hearts during life; and afterward—to the dead!

The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper,

[Now] none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.

Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you twelve? Yet is not one of you a devil?”

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the holy Spirit and retained part of the price of the land?
