Have you really cast Judah off? Is Zion loathsome to you? Why have you struck us a blow that cannot be healed? We wait for peace, to no avail; for a time of healing, but terror comes instead.

For Israel and Judah are not left widowed by their God, the Lord of hosts, Even though the land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.

“Silver rejected” they shall be called, for the Lord has rejected them.

Cut off your hair and throw it away! on the heights raise a lament; The Lord has indeed rejected and cast off the generation that draws down his wrath.

We wait for peace to no avail; for a time of healing, but terror comes instead.

Is there no balm in Gilead, no healer there? Why does new flesh not grow over the wound of the daughter of my people?

To what can I compare you—to what can I liken you— O daughter Jerusalem? What example can I give in order to comfort you, virgin daughter Zion? For your breach is vast as the sea; who could heal you?

You summoned as to a feast day terrors on every side; On the day of the Lord’s wrath, none survived or escaped. Those I have borne and nurtured, my enemy has utterly destroyed.”

Even now our eyes are worn out, searching in vain for help; From our watchtower we have watched for a nation unable to save.

For now you have indeed rejected us and utterly turned your wrath against us.

The inhabitants of Maroth hope for good, But evil has come down from the Lord to the gate of Jerusalem.

When people are saying, “Peace and security,” then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
