Isaiah 49:4

Though I thought I had toiled in vain, for nothing and for naught spent my strength, Yet my right is with the Lord, my recompense is with my God.

He answered: “I have been most zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts, but the Israelites have forsaken your covenant. They have destroyed your altars and murdered your prophets by the sword. I alone remain, and they seek to take my life.”

Many curry favor with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that one receives justice.

O Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name; For you have carried out your wonderful plans of old, faithful and true.

Say to the fearful of heart: Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; With divine recompense he comes to save you.

Here comes with power the Lord God, who rules by his strong arm; Here is his reward with him, his recompense before him.

Why, O Jacob, do you say, and declare, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”?

There is no peace for the wicked! says my God.

According to their deeds he repays his enemies and requites his foes with wrath; to the coastlands he renders recompense.

I will rejoice heartily in the Lord, my being exults in my God; For he has clothed me with garments of salvation, and wrapped me in a robe of justice, Like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

The Lord has proclaimed to the ends of the earth: Say to daughter Zion, “See, your savior comes! See, his reward is with him, his recompense before him.”

I have stretched out my hands all day to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, following their own designs;

They shall not toil in vain, nor beget children for sudden destruction; For they shall be a people blessed by the Lord and their descendants with them.

If, however, you warn the wicked and they still do not turn from their wickedness and evil conduct, they shall die for their sin, but you shall save your life.

so that your strength will be spent in vain; your land will bear no crops, and its trees no fruit.

Jesus said in reply, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him here to me.”

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling!

Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”

He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.

But regarding Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contentious people.”

I will most gladly spend and be utterly spent for your sakes. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?

For we are the aroma of Christ for God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,

I am afraid on your account that perhaps I have labored for you in vain. Appeal to Former Loyalty.

as you hold on to the word of life, so that my boast for the day of Christ may be that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
