Who say to the seers, “Do not see”; to the prophets, “Do not prophesy truth for us; speak smooth things to us, see visions that deceive!

Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me out, my enemy?” He said, “I have found you. Because you have given yourself up to doing evil in the Lord’s sight,

and say, ‘This is the king’s order: Put this man in prison and feed him scanty rations of bread and water until I come back in safety.’”

But Asa became angry with the seer and imprisoned him in the stocks, so greatly was he enraged at him over this. Asa also oppressed some of his people at this time.

While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: “Have you been appointed the king’s counselor? Stop! Why should you have to be killed?” Therefore the prophet stopped. But he said, “I know that God’s counsel is your destruction, for by doing this you have refused to listen to my counsel.” Amaziah Punished.

Whoever has assailed me, I will pay back— Everything under the heavens is mine.

You have declared, “We have made a covenant with death, with Sheol we have made a pact; When the raging flood passes through, it will not reach us; For we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have found a hiding place,”—

For the Lord has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep. He has shut your eyes (the prophets) and covered your heads (the seers).

Ah! Those who call evil good, and good evil, who change darkness to light, and light into darkness, who change bitter to sweet, and sweet into bitter!

Therefore, thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth who seek your life and say, “Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord; otherwise you shall die by our hand.”

They say to those who despise the word of the Lord, “Peace shall be yours”; And to everyone who walks in hardness of heart, “No evil shall overtake you.”

The priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the people, “Sentence this man to death! He has prophesied against this city! You heard it with your own ears.”

Why, then, have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who poses as a prophet among you?

And against Jehoiakim, king of Judah, say this: Thus says the Lord: You are the one who burned that scroll, saying, “Why did you write on it: Babylon’s king shall surely come and ravage this land, emptying it of every living thing”?

Then the princes said to the king, “This man ought to be put to death. He is weakening the resolve of the soldiers left in this city and of all the people, by saying such things to them; he is not seeking the welfare of our people, but their ruin.”

The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests teach on their own authority; Yet my people like it this way; what will you do when the end comes?

But you made the nazirites drink wine, and commanded the prophets, “Do not prophesy!”

But never again prophesy in Bethel; for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal temple.”

If one possessed of a lying spirit speaks deceitfully, saying, “I will preach to you wine and strong drink,” that one would be the preacher for this people.

“Do not preach,” they preach, “no one should preach of these things! Shame will not overtake us.”

The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify to it that its works are evil.

But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.

But so that it may not be spread any further among the people, let us give them a stern warning never again to speak to anyone in this name.”

“We gave you strict orders [did we not?] to stop teaching in that name. Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.”

For such people do not serve our Lord Christ but their own appetites, and by fair and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the innocent.

So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?

For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers

and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths.

When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the abyss will wage war against them and conquer them and kill them.

(In former times in Israel, anyone who went to consult God used to say, “Come, let us go to the seer.” For the one who is now called prophet was formerly called seer.)
