Howl, O gate; cry out, O city! Philistia, all of you melts away! For there comes a smoke from the north, without a straggler in its ranks.

The castle will be forsaken, the noisy city deserted; Citadel and tower will become wasteland forever, the joy of wild donkeys, the pasture of flocks;

And the forest will come down completely, the city will be utterly laid low.

I will go before you and level the mountains; Bronze doors I will shatter, iron bars I will snap.

Who is wise enough to understand this? To whom has the mouth of the Lord spoken? Let him declare it! Why is the land ravaged, scorched like a wilderness no one crosses?

How solitary sits the city, once filled with people. She who was great among the nations is now like a widow. Once a princess among the provinces, now a toiling slave.

The roads to Zion mourn, empty of pilgrims to her feasts. All her gateways are desolate, her priests groan, Her young women grieve; her lot is bitter.

Her gates sank into the ground; he smashed her bars to bits. Her king and her princes are among the nations; instruction is wanting, Even her prophets do not obtain any vision from the Lord.

Because of Mount Zion, lying desolate, and the jackals roaming there!

The inhabitants of Maroth hope for good, But evil has come down from the Lord to the gate of Jerusalem.

For her wound is incurable; it has come even to Judah. It has reached to the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.

The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
