Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your garments, put on sackcloth, and mourn over Abner.” King David himself followed the bier.

When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his garments. And as he was walking on the wall, the people saw that he was wearing sackcloth underneath, next to his skin.

Daughter Dibon has gone up to the high places to weep; Over Nebo and over Medeba Moab is wailing. Every head is shaved, every beard sheared off.

When you build a new house, put a parapet around the roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt upon your house if someone falls off.

Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries.

Those who escaped death were afflicted with tumors. Thus the outcry from the city went up to the heavens.
