David was king over all Israel; he dispensed justice and right to all his people.

He gave them this command: “Thus you shall act: in the fear of the Lord, with fidelity and with an undivided heart.

Judgment is turned away, and justice stands far off; For truth stumbles in the public square, and uprightness cannot enter.

Fidelity is lacking, and whoever turns from evil is despoiled. The Lord saw this, and was aggrieved that there was no justice.

For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with crime; Your lips speak falsehood, and your tongue utters deceit.

If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and then becomes the wife of another, Can she return to the first? Would not this land be wholly defiled? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers, and yet you would return to me!—oracle of the Lord.

Or I will strip her naked, leaving her as on the day of her birth; I will make her like the wilderness, make her like an arid land, and let her die of thirst.

This is why the law is numb and justice never comes, For the wicked surround the just; this is why justice comes forth perverted.

Thus says the Lord: I have returned to Zion, and I will dwell within Jerusalem; Jerusalem will be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts, the holy mountain.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling!

Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.

No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering,

But exclude the outer court of the temple; do not measure it, for it has been handed over to the Gentiles, who will trample the holy city for forty-two months.

Their corpses will lie in the main street of the great city, which has the symbolic names “Sodom” and “Egypt,” where indeed their Lord was crucified.

Then one of the seven angels who were holding the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come here. I will show you the judgment on the great harlot who lives near the many waters.
