So when Joseph came up to his brothers, they stripped him of his tunic, the long ornamented tunic he had on;

Then they sat down to eat. Looking up, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, their camels laden with gum, balm, and resin to be taken down to Egypt.

To one another, however, they said: “Truly we are being punished because of our brother. We saw the anguish of his heart when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen. That is why this anguish has now come upon us.”

And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, in the court of the guard, letting him down by rope. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

The Lord’s anointed—our very lifebreath!— was caught in their snares, He in whose shade we thought to live among the nations.

As for you, by the blood of your covenant, I have freed your prisoners from a waterless pit.
