Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben; for she said, “It means, ‘The Lord saw my misery; surely now my husband will love me.’”

Then the Lord’s angel said to her: “You are now pregnant and shall bear a son; you shall name him Ishmael, For the Lord has heeded your affliction.

When the Lord saw that Leah was unloved, he made her fruitful, while Rachel was barren.

The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel. (He was indeed the firstborn, but because he defiled the couch of his father his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, son of Israel, so that he is not listed in the family records according to his birthright.

Still God had regard for their affliction when he heard their wailing.

Look upon my affliction and suffering; take away all my sins.

But the Lord said: I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry against their taskmasters, so I know well what they are suffering.

The people believed, and when they heard that the Lord had observed the Israelites and had seen their affliction, they knelt and bowed down.
