There was nothing in the ark but the two stone tablets which Moses had put there at Horeb, when the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they went forth from the land of Egypt.

They swore an oath to the Lord with a loud voice, with shouting and with trumpets and horns.

“Gather my loyal ones to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

But they deceived him with their mouths, lied to him with their tongues.

Have we not all one father? Has not one God created us? Why, then, do we break faith with each other, profaning the covenant of our ancestors?

I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brothers.

Then the people promised Joshua, “We will serve the Lord, our God, and will listen to his voice.”
