Then a new king, who knew nothing of Joseph, rose to power in Egypt.

He turned their hearts to hate his people, to treat his servants deceitfully.

Go and gather the elders of the Israelites, and tell them, The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said: I have observed you and what is being done to you in Egypt;

But the Lord said: I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry against their taskmasters, so I know well what they are suffering.

Now indeed the outcry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them.

But in the city lived a man who, though poor, was wise, and he delivered it through his wisdom. Yet no one remembered this poor man.

until another king who knew nothing of Joseph came to power [in Egypt].

He dealt shrewdly with our people and oppressed [our] ancestors by forcing them to expose their infants, that they might not survive.

When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us, imposing harsh servitude upon us,

When the rest of that generation were also gathered to their ancestors, and a later generation arose that did not know the Lord or the work he had done for Israel,
