and said, “The Lord, our God, has indeed let us see his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from the midst of the fire. Today we have found out that God may speak to a mortal and that person may still live.

Jacob then asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He answered, “Why do you ask for my name?” With that, he blessed him.

Jacob named the place Peniel, “because I have seen God face to face,” he said, “yet my life has been spared.”

The blast of the shofar grew louder and louder, while Moses was speaking and God was answering him with thunder.

The Lord said to Moses: This is what you will say to the Israelites: You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven.

But you cannot see my face, for no one can see me and live.

Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?

But when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, you came near to me, all your tribal heads and elders,

Now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord, our God, any more, we shall die.

said to his wife, “We will certainly die, for we have seen God.”
