These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites.

May the Lord reign forever and ever!

Whenever they have a disagreement, they come to me to have me settle the matter between them and make known to them God’s statutes and instructions.”

Now, listen to me, and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. Act as the people’s representative before God, and bring their disputes to God.

Thus says the Lord who made you, your help, who formed you from the womb: Do not fear, Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

Misfortune I do not see in Jacob, nor do I see misery in Israel. The Lord, their God, is with them; among them is the war-cry of their King.

So Jacob ate and was satisfied, Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; you became fat and gross and gorged. They forsook the God who made them and scorned the Rock of their salvation.

There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens in his power, who rides the clouds in his majesty;

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in their own eyes.

The Israelites then said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son, and your son’s son—for you saved us from the power of Midian.”

“Put this question to all the lords of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you: that seventy men, all Jerubbaal’s sons, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?’ You must remember that I am your own flesh and bone.”
