The king stood by the column and made a covenant in the presence of the Lord to follow the Lord and to observe his commandments, statutes, and decrees with his whole heart and soul, and to re-establish the words of the covenant written in this book. Speak to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

These are the statutes, decrees and laws which the Lord established between himself and the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.

These are the commandments which the Lord gave Moses on Mount Sinai for the Israelites.

You are the children of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors when he said to Abraham, ‘In your offspring all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’

These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah, opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt, by a route which I told you that you would never see again; and there you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.

so that he may establish you today as his people and he may be your God, as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

the great testings your own eyes have seen, and those great signs and wonders.

Future generations, your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigners who will come here from distant lands, when they see the calamities of this land and the ills the Lord has inflicted upon it—

and they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know and whom he had not apportioned to them.

that day you stood before the Lord, your God, at Horeb, when the Lord said to me: Assemble the people for me, that I may let them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me as long as they live in the land and may so teach their children.

He proclaimed to you his covenant, which he commanded you to keep: the ten words, which he wrote on two stone tablets.

Be careful, therefore, lest you forget the covenant which the Lord, your God, has made with you, and fashion for yourselves against his command an idol in any form whatsoever.

It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt; for they did not stand by my covenant and I ignored them, says the Lord.

But you must fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart, for you have seen the great things the Lord has done among you.
