Neither the sun nor the stars were visible for many days, and no small storm raged. Finally, all hope of our surviving was taken away.

Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I passed a night and a day on the deep;

were at that time without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
