Acts 14:23

They appointed presbyters for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, commended them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith.

He appointed twelve [whom he also named apostles] that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach

and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”; and when he had said this he breathed his last.

beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection.”

Then they prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen

This they did, sending it to the presbyters in care of Barnabas and Saul.

From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now accomplished.

This is the letter delivered by them: “The apostles and the presbyters, your brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia of Gentile origin: greetings.

When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, as well as by the apostles and the presbyters, and they reported what God had done with them.

The apostles and the presbyters met together to see about this matter.

From Miletus he had the presbyters of the church at Ephesus summoned.

And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated.

And not only that, but he has also been appointed our traveling companion by the churches in this gracious work administered by us for the glory of the Lord [himself] and for the expression of our eagerness.

Do not rebuke an older man, but appeal to him as a father. Treat younger men as brothers,

Do not lay hands too readily on anyone, and do not share in another’s sins. Keep yourself pure.

On this account I am suffering these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.

And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well.

For this reason I left you in Crete so that you might set right what remains to be done and appoint presbyters in every town, as I directed you,

Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord,

So I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed.

The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ [Jesus] will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.

The Presbyter to the chosen Lady and to her children whom I love in truth—and not only I but also all who know the truth—

The Presbyter to the beloved Gaius whom I love in truth.
