Perhaps the Lord, your God, will hear all the words of the commander, whom his lord, the king of Assyria, sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke him for the words which the Lord, your God, has heard. So lift up a prayer for the remnant that is here.”

he said to them, “Tell this to your lord: Thus says the Lord: Do not be frightened by the words you have heard, by which the deputies of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

That I may praise you with the lyre for your faithfulness, my God, And sing to you with the harp, O Holy One of Israel!

Will you continue to exalt yourself over my people and not let them go?

There are some—how haughty their eyes! how overbearing their glance!

For he says: “By my own power I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am shrewd. I have moved the boundaries of peoples, their treasures I have pillaged, and, like a mighty one, I have brought down the enthroned.

Will the ax boast against the one who hews with it? Will the saw exalt itself above the one who wields it? As if a rod could sway the one who lifts it, or a staff could lift the one who is not wood!

For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: By waiting and by calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust shall be your strength. But this you did not will.

Therefore, as the tongue of fire licks up stubble, as dry grass shrivels in the flame, Their root shall rot and their blossom scatter like dust; For they have rejected the instruction of the Lord of hosts, and scorned the word of the Holy One of Israel.

For Israel and Judah are not left widowed by their God, the Lord of hosts, Even though the land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.

It grew even to the Prince of the host, from whom the daily sacrifice was removed, and whose sanctuary was cast down.

and every pretension raising itself against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive in obedience to Christ,

who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship, so as to seat himself in the temple of God, claiming that he is a god—
