2 Kings 17:34

To this very day they continue to act according to their former customs, not venerating the Lord nor observing the statutes and regulations, the law and commandment, that the Lord enjoined on the descendants of Jacob, whom he had named Israel.

“What is your name?” the man asked. He answered, “Jacob.”

Then the man said, “You shall no longer be named Jacob, but Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.”

He set up an altar there and invoked “El, the God of Israel.”

God said to him: Your name is Jacob. You will no longer be named Jacob, but Israel will be your name. So he was named Israel.

and said to Jeroboam: “Take ten pieces for yourself. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I am about to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and will give you ten of the tribes.

And now you say, ‘Go tell your lord: Elijah is here!’

He took twelve stones, for the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the Lord had said: Israel shall be your name.

When they first settled there, they did not venerate the Lord, so he sent lions among them that killed some of them.

They were both venerating the Lord and serving their own gods. They followed the custom of the nations from among whom they had been deported.

But they did not listen; they continued to act according to their former customs.

God, who sits enthroned forever, will hear me and afflict them. Selah For they will not mend their ways; they have no fear of God.

Those who walk uprightly fear the Lord, but those who are devious in their ways spurn him.

Hear this, house of Jacob called by the name Israel, sprung from the stock of Judah, You who swear by the name of the Lord and invoke the God of Israel without sincerity, without justice,
