Not that we dare to class or compare ourselves with some of those who recommend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

No doubt you are the people with whom wisdom shall die!

To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor.

You see those who are wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for fools than for them.

Let another praise you, not your own mouth; a stranger, not your own lips.

The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector.

For I will not dare to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to lead the Gentiles to obedience by word and deed,

Such a person must understand that what we are in word through letters when absent, that we also are in action when present.

For it is not the one who recommends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord recommends.

Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you or from you?

We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you an opportunity to boast of us, so that you may have something to say to those who boast of external appearance rather than of the heart.
